Here is an example of a math lesson in the Primary classroom.

Multiplication work
with the Golden Beads

The work with the mathematical materials in the Primary classroom has a two-fold benefit for the child. Through the mathematic exercises, the child develops the power of reasoning, clarity of thought, seeing relationships and making abstractions. In other words, the child is developing his Mathematical Mind. The second benefit is that through the power of the Mathematical Mind, the child is led to understand mathematical principles. Around age four, the child begins working with the mathematical materials. He is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses.

When they leave the (mathematical) material, the children very easily reach the point where they wish to write out the operation. They can best carry out an abstract mental operation and acquire a kind of natural and spontaneous inclination for mental calculations.

~Maria Montessori

The child's development follows a path of successive stages of independence, and our knowledge of this must guide us in our behavior towards him.

~Maria Montessori

The children of different ages in the school help one another. There is a communication and a harmony. Older ones become teachers and heroes to the younger children. The little ones sense that when they are bigger their turn will come.
